How it works

Each lesson begins with your student playing an excerpt—usually the piece we worked on the week before—and we work together on dynamics, fingerings, phrasing, and technique before moving into new material. You're welcome to provide your own music, or I'm happy to bring repertoire suited to your student's level and interests.

Philosophy

As a classically trained violinist with 15 years of experience, I place particular emphasis on form early on: posture, bow hold, and left-hand position shape everything about a student's sound, and building those habits correctly from the beginning makes every other aspect of playing easier. That said, I want lessons to be enjoyable, so I still make an effort to learn about your student and tie their interests into lessons. A student who enjoys practicing will always improve faster than one who doesn't! I work with beginners through intermediate players of all ages(0—6 years experience).

Experience

I studied under Betty Haag, considered one of the premier violin instructors in the world, for 8 years. With her, I've performed at Ravinia, the Northshore Chamber Music Festival, and Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center. Through Hersey, I led second violins in the District Honors Orchestra and the Hersey Symphony Orchestra as the concertmaster. This year, I taught lessons to middle and high school students around UVA, utilizing the same philosophy of fun lessons and fundamental-focus.
