Owen Teaches

About Me

Hi everyone, I'm Owen! I'm from Arlington Heights and currently entering my second year at the University of Virginia, where I'm an Echols Scholar majoring in Commerce and Biology.

I've been teaching in some form for the past four years: math and Spanish tutoring in high school, swim instruction at the Arlington Heights Park District, and violin lessons through a program I started at UVA. What all of that experience has taught me is that instruction is most fun (both for me and a student!) when it’s individualized. I love teaching because creating that individualized lesson is a problem-solving exercise for me. As an instructor, it’s my job to learn about a student’s interests and prior knowledge, so I can make a lesson that addresses their needs while being uniquely interesting to them. 

My goal in every lesson is to work with your student, not at them. That means I build each lesson plan from scratch and stay flexible enough to adjust when something isn't clicking. Learning is a lot more effective when it's engaging, and it's engaging when it connects to something a student actually cares about.
